Recent Samsung televisions install an app in a few minutes. On older sets, the approach is completely different. Here are both scenarios, explained without jargon.
Before you start
- The television must be online — check by opening an app that is already installed.
- Keep your credentials to hand, in the message your provider sent you.
- Have the remote ready: everything is typed on screen.
Scenario 1: your model still accepts new apps
- Press the Home button on the remote.
- Open the Apps section, then the search icon.
- Type the name of the app your provider gave you.
- Select Install, then Open once it finishes.
- On first launch the app shows a device identifier — write it down, some providers ask for it.
- Then enter your credentials and confirm.
The first load of the content list can take a minute. That is normal: the app retrieves the whole catalogue before displaying it.
Scenario 2: the app does not exist in your store
On Samsung sets from roughly before 2018, the store offers little and third-party apps disappear over successive updates. There is no point fighting it: the reliable fix is an external device on an HDMI port.
- Fire TV Stick — the most common option, driven by its own remote.
- Android box — more versatile and often more capable for high definition.
You keep your television and simply change the input. The experience is usually smoother than the TV's built-in system.
Fixing the most common problems
- Black screen at launch — close the app completely (hold the back button), then reopen it. If it persists, unplug the television for thirty seconds.
- Credentials rejected — retype them slowly. Capitals, dashes and look-alike characters (the digit 0 and the letter O) are the most frequent cause.
- Stuttering picture — use an Ethernet cable, or move the television closer to the router and switch to the 5 GHz band.
- The app disappears after an update — reinstall it from the store. You will need to re-enter your credentials, but nothing is lost.
In summary
In most cases installation takes under ten minutes. If your model can no longer keep up, an inexpensive external box is a better decision than replacing a television that works perfectly well.
