"I have 300 Mbps and the picture still stutters." We hear that often, and it captures the misunderstanding neatly: for streaming video, a steady connection matters more than a high peak. Here are the figures worth knowing.
Rough figures by quality
These are widely accepted reference values for one video stream at a time. They vary with the compression used at the source:

Advertised speed versus real speed
The figure on your bill is a theoretical maximum measured where the line enters the home. What actually reaches your television then depends on three things: the quality of the Wi-Fi over the last few metres, how many devices are connected at once, and the load on your provider's network at peak times.
That is why a generous plan guarantees nothing on its own: a large share of the speed can be lost between the router and the living room.
Wi-Fi or Ethernet?
For a device that never moves — a television, a box — an Ethernet cable is by far the best decision. It removes micro-interruptions, does not care about walls or neighbours, and costs the price of a cable.
If a cable is impossible:
- Use the 5 GHz band: faster and far less congested than 2.4 GHz, though it travels through walls less well.
- Move the router closer to where you watch, or raise it: signal degrades sharply at floor level and behind furniture.
- A well-placed powerline adapter or repeater often beats a high-end router in a bad position.
Testing your connection properly
- Run the test from the device that has the problem, not from a laptop sitting next to the router.
- Run it when the problem happens — usually in the evening, when the neighbourhood network is busy.
- Note the download speed, but above all the latency and the jitter (latency variation): high jitter causes stutter even with comfortable bandwidth.
- Repeat the test on your phone's hotspot: if everything smooths out, the problem is indeed inside your home network.
Lowering the quality is a reasonable decision
On a modest connection, lowering the quality in the app's settings is not an admission of defeat: a stable high-definition picture beats a 4K one that freezes every two minutes. On a television under 55 inches viewed from a normal distance, the visible difference between 1080p and 4K is small anyway.
In summary
Aim for a real 25 Mbps for comfortable high definition and 50 Mbps for 4K, measured from the device concerned at the time you actually watch. And before paying for a faster plan, try an Ethernet cable: it fixes more problems than any speed increase.
